Research Progress & Agenda
My research focuses on the inter-connections among institutional arrangements, individual behavior, and policy outcomes. My areas of expertise include urban politics, public policy (particularly urban development, education, and intergovernmental relations), and participation (with a focus on local involvement and minority politics). My work examines the reciprocal effects among public policies, urban institutions, participatory behaviors, and social and political organization. I am recognized as an expert on education politics and reform and urban service delivery (how/why local governments provide public benefits and services), and hope that my more recent work will establish me as an important researcher on issues of urban/local participation, an area largely neglected by those studying political behavior, and minority incorporation in local politics.
Since 1997 I have published (either singly or collaboratively) a Princeton University Press book, which won the Aaron Wildavsky Award for best book in 2001-02, 8 refereed articles, and 7 non-refereed pieces. I have a forthcoming article at Political Research Quarterly, another piece under R&R at Political Behavior and a third piece under review at Public Choice. In addition, I have three articles that are currently in preparation for submission. I have successfully competed for research funding in the amount of approximately $53,000. Finally, I have presented papers at 4 foundation-sponsored workshops, more than a dozen conferences and have served 8 times as a panel discussant or roundtable participant. In sum, in the last 5 years I have been a very productive scholar; my work has appeared in highly visible outlets and I have regularly presented my work at prominent conferences and workshops.
Between 1994-2000, I was heavily involved in a collaborative research project investigating the effects of school choice arrangements on parents¿ incentives, information and behavior. In addition to this project, over the past several years I have worked on publishing articles from my dissertation. Indeed, four of my single-authored articles (2 published, 1 forthcoming, 1 under revision) stem from my dissertation and deal with the place of schools in urban communities, patterns of local participatory behavior, and other related questions. This research also builds and seeks to improve upon a small body of political science research that examines the ways in which context (the broader milieu in which individuals reside) shapes citizen participation and attitudes. In my work I have incorporated more appropriate methods to measure and test for the effects context while also developing a more compelling theoretical framework for how and why context should matter for individual-level behaviors and orientations. I believe my work stands to make an important contribution to this area of inquiry.
With funding from several small seed-grants, I have nearly completed a large-scale data collection effort on a new project investigating minority incorporation in local politics. Three manuscripts (coauthored with Anirudh Ruhil-UIC) are currently in progress and several others will follow. This new project will allow me build on my existing research while at the same time continuing to investigate questions that examine the inter-connections among institutional arrangements, individual behavior, and policy outcomes.
